We started the day at Anjana Chouraha. Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech. About 50 – 60 people attended. Collected Rs. 50. people evinced great interest in the statistics reg. rising prices, and Govt. salaries.

Next halt: Devgarh
Here we joined a group of people protesting in front of the Tehsil office, against illegal occupation of common land adjoining their villages. They listened to our presentation with rapt attention and made the single largest contribution by any group – Rs. 271! There were about 50 people in this group.
Made another presentation in the market area – songs, slogans, speech, and a puppet show. Collection Rs. 35. few people attended because of the hot sun.

Next halt: Taal
Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech by Narayan Singh. Collection Rs. 116; about 110 people attended. Got lots of signatures on our banner for support of our demands.

Next halt: Toddgarh
Had a very good meeting here. Around 130 people attended. Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech by Tej Singh, Narayan Singh. Pupet show by Punna Ram. One NREGA mate complained that wages ranged from Rs. 60 – 69, and were delayed on average by six months. Total collection: Rs. 289. All collections monitored diligently by Chaitanya, with help from others!
Had tea at Tej Singh’s place!

Our presentation in the morning comprised songs, speech, and money collection, signatures etc. around 30 – 40 people attended. Collection Rs. 25. low attendance due to a festival going on in the village. Another employee of Mahila Manch joined us here.

Next halt: Charbhuija
Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech by Paras. One person again complained of low wages in NREGA – Rs. 60; another of delayed payments by 6 months. Collection Rs. 35. attendance: 50 – 60 people.

Next halt: Gomti Chauraha
Had breakfast, bathed in the river, and washed clothes in Gomti.
Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech by Lal Singh. Around 70 people attended. Collection Rs. 52.

Had great lunch in Bassi village. A short program incl. song, and a speech by Mohan Ba.

Next halt: Dewer
Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech. Around 100 people attended. Collection Rs. 62. one person in the audience complained of corruption in all govt. depts.

Next halt: Kamli Ghat
Took a procession through the market – songs, slogans, speech. Also an interactive puppet show by Punna Ram. Around 100 people attended. Collection Rs. 78. as a rule, we noted the names of people contributing money, but some people did not give their names. One person said he received full payment of Rs. 100 in NREGA.

Night halt: Dolpura
Stayed the night at Panchayat Ghar. Before dinner we made a presentation in the village. This was probably our largest gathering – over 250 people attended. An interactive puppet show by Punna Ram, songs, speech, signatures, and also a play performance. People – old, young, kids, women – all listened with rapt attention. Great response here. Collection Rs.142. one person, Sohan Ji, contributed Rs. 50. Two people from the audience participated in the discussions, and made short speeches in support of the yatra, and our efforts. The program lasted over 90 minutes here.

Started the day in Nathdwara with a procession through the bus stand – songs, slogans, speech by Lal Singh. Around 100 people attended. Collection Rs. 36.

Next halt: Pakhand
Took a procession through the market. Mahila Manch, Rajsamanad employee Sharda joined us. Songs, speech, slogans, signatures. Collection Rs. 72. people complained of low wages in NREGA – Rs. 50, 60. Statistics presentation by Aditya.

Next halt: Railmangra
Very good program here. Enthusiastic crowd here of around 100 people. Collection of Rs. 176 (three persons contributed Rs. 50 each. One person complained of delayed payment in NREGA. Visited Jatan NGO – had tea, heard of their work reg. pension schemes for unorganized workers in Rajasthan. Met the Pradhan’s husband in Railmangra, who treated us all to lunch.

Next halt: Kankroli
Made presentations at two places here – market, and the bus / auto stand. Good crowd of around 150 people. Good press coverage too. Speech, songs, slogans, signatures. Total collection: Rs. 156. One govt. employee in the crowd spoke against NREGA, and work ethic of the workers (basically complaining of shoddy work, and lax standards).

Our truck broke down in the evening. So reached ‘Dhanin’ village very late at night. One group comprising Saikat, Kheema Ram and a few others had a lively discussion regarding wage disparity, and NREGA with the villagers who were waiting for us. Stayed the night in a school premises, and made our yatra presentation in the morning.

Started the day by visiting Kumbalgarh fort, as our truck had broken down the previous day and some people were getting it repaired.

Made a presentation in Kelwara – speech, statistics reg. rising prices, salary increases of govt. employees; sang songs; signature campaign. Collection Rs. 12. About 60 – 70 attended.

Could not do Nathdwara, as our truck broke down again. Spent the night in Rajsamand.

Earlier in the day, we bid goodbye to TISS interns who had been a great help the previous four days!

Woke up early at 5 a.m. and went to ‘Maharaja Umaid Mills’, a textile mill employing over 6,000 employees. Their salary: Rs. 80 – 160 per day, depending on seniority. Although not directly linked to NREGA themselves, nearly all the workers had come from rural areas and were both aware and interested in issues concerning: Min. wages, NREGA unions, and linking wages to inflation. Almost 250 people attended our morning session, where we performed a play, sang songs and made speeches. Total collection: Rs. 150.

Left Pali at 11 a.m after breakfast.

Next stop: Nadol
Procession, speech by Lal Singh, collecting signatures. People said they receive on avg. Rs. 70 per day for NREGA. An angry young man (some sort of a local leader) made a fiery speech against NREGA corruption and low wages. Collection: Rs. 62. around 60 – 70 people.

Next stop: Desuri
Puppet show, speech and statistics presentation by Paras . Collected Rs. 125. Gathering of 100 people or so.

Our truck broke down en route to Majera (near Kumbalgarh).
